Mouse Will Not Operate - Frozen

Last night, I got a call from a friend. It seems their desktop was working fine, they were playing Solitare, shut it down normally and when they rebooted this morning, the mouse no longer worked. They did unplug the mouse, restarted, plugged it back in, nothing happened. They then rebooted, nothing happened. The mouse is basically frozen, therefore we cannot get any further than the startup screen.

I suggested they get rid of the mouse they were using (which was wireless) and plug in a PS2 mouse. They did this, and same results. They tried unplugging, rebooting, etc., and still no activity.

I lent them a USB mouse last night, and once again, the same problems and same results.

I am not sure what they have in their computer, I cleaned it up about 2 months back, and it has been working fine. What would cause this and is there any way around this to get into the Device Manager or something to check ports.

Windows Key + Pause key for system properties

Any idea WHY this would happen and nothing would recognize or work?

Here's something to try. In the BIOS, disable COM1 and COM2, then disable them in Windows Device Manager. Reboot and then re-enable them in the BIOS and then in Device manager. There may be a device conflict and Windows needs to manage the device.
