So I am trying to fix my girlfriends laptop. I have been in the process of fixing the myriad of problems for two days now. The only problem that is still giving me trouble is the fact that the usb ports on the computer are not working right. There are 4 total, they all should be USB 2.0 and only one of them is working. . . at USB 1.1 speed. I cant seem to find a driver fix on the website, or a forum on the gateway website (one can hope right?) and I would really appreciate some help on this. Any advice would help me out. Even if its just an opinion.
The specs are as follows:
The Model is:
Gateway 4026GZ Laptop
CPU:
1.30 GHz Celeron M
RAM:
256 MB DDR 333 ram (that I am upgrading to 1.25 GB once i figure this out)
Hard Drive:
40 GB
I really dont think any other information would help, but if there is anything else that you guys need to know to help me out I would be more than happy to provide it. |

Are the USBs recognized in control panel/system hardware profile?
If they are.......try rolling back the driver to a previous version.
If there is no previous driver to roll back to.........try deleting them from the list and then re booting the system ..........XP should re install them for you.
Another ploy to get them is to Go to Microsoft update and update by selecting custom. When you select custom it will search for hardware updates also. You will find them under hardware in the left hand side bar.
Be careful regarding video drivers .......those have been missing the mark as of late.
You may also find them in the system restore disc.....if you have one...... by browsing the restore disc files. |

I did see the chipset update in the list of drivers.
That should be done as well. |

I tried erasing them and rebooting but it ended up just having the same problem all over again. Maybe this is because it was a flash drive? I am wondering if maybe the problem will not be so pronounced if it is another device.
I will post back in a little bit with the exact drivers I am dealing with just in case that would help anybody. |

so I reinstalled that motherboard update(I had already installed it before) and I tried using the flash drives again. I tested 4 different flash drives and I gst the same result on all of them.
"USB device not recognized"
and then it told me that
The error message I got from windows read something like this
the USB device had malfunctioned and that if it malfunctioned again I should replace the device. I tried this with 4 different devices and got the same message. And this is what I have been getting from the start.
I just thought I would be more specific this time. |

Open Device Manager and check the properties of the USB Root Hub. Under the Power Management tab "Allow the computer to turn off the device to save power" should be unchecked.
While you are there in Device manager you can also "Scan for hardware changes" under the Action menu. |

I checked all the USB drivers in the device manager and set them all to not turn off devices, but that didnt stop the problem. I also checked for changes, but that didnt help either. I even tried rolling back the drivers but that was a no go as well. Any other ideas? Im pretty vexed at this point. |
