| Problems with new computer (Asus P5NSLI)
Hey guys. Noob here to the forums. I just built my new system and am having some issues with it. I have built several dozen AMD systems (usually with Abit MB's) and this is my 2nd Intel w/Asus system. I have the E6600 Core 2 Duo with an Asus P5NSLI MB, by everything I read it should flat out scream...It doesn't. I built my Son a 945 Pentium D 3.4Ghz with an Asus P5VDC-MX and his SMOKES mine easily on everything, this is why I suspect there is something going on.
It is slow to open nearly anything and when I am multitasking, it reboots itself. It takes a good 45 seconds to a minute to fully boot with Norton Anti Virus. Here are my specs.
Processor: Intel E6600 Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz
Motherboard: Asus P5NSLI
Processor Cooling: Zalman 9500
Graphics Card: nVidia 7800 GTX 256mb
Memory: Corsair Value Select DDR2 667 (2Gb) 2 Sticks
Master Hard Drive: Western Digital 80GB SATA
Backup Hard Drives: Western Digital 250GB & 160GB Both IDE Drives
Operating System: Windows XP Professional
I had heard that the nVidia MB drivers caused issues and the uninstalled them. HELP
Mike

I would hope that someone out there could help me instead of "Flaming" me because I chose one chip over another.

I think Mike you have answered your own problem hehehe. Not going to flame but honest Opinion. Get rid of Norton Antivirus ASAP! Its just plain junk Extremely Huge resource hog and which also causes other great deal of issues. There is a Tool to completely remove it. Do a google search for Norton Removal Tool. Sorry I would link it Damn work comp is limiting me Then install the Nvidia Mobo driver see what happens I doubt that is the problem it could be and could not be. The problem is that Norton. What are you temps like just curious.

Well, i'm not a fan of Norton either, but I doubt it would be the cause of random reboots. Atleast I've never had it be the cause of reboots, not on a clean install anyway. What type of power supply are you running in that system? Also, like Micro Bean suggested, check your temps. Those LGA775 heatsinks can be a bit tricky to properly mount to the board and if it isn't on correctly, it can and will cause the CPU to throttle it's speed down, and eventually shut down the PC.
Oh, and ruleofnike69, his problem is on his Intel C2D system, not AMD.

I ran AVG anti virus on my old stuff but never saw any great performance over the norton. I will get rid of the norton and go back to the AVG to see if that helps. I checked my CPU temp and it is 43c - 36c. It has also given me the blue screen of death 4 or 5 times since I built it last week. I am running an Antec Smartpower 500w power supply. I also have 2 120 case fans running as well.
I had always been a hardcore AMD fan and have owned 8 AMD systems in the last 5 years and never ran into a problem. I built my Sons setup 4 months back with the Pentium D 945 (also has Norton BTW) and his system flat out screams, and he only has 1 gig of DDR 400 memory.

I never had good experiences with the "smartpower" antecs.
Also agree dump the norton.
I myself have had some serious issues with any of the newer Nvidia drivers with certain card/motherboard combinations.
I ended up not using them all together and strictly use these modified ones from NGOHQ.com http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=F...&dwn_cat_id=10
I had the random BSOD's,laggy as hell, just lost it's snot so to say.
I load in the NGO drivers and becomes slick and trouble free.
My theory is a setting or something in the control panel for nvidia itself.
Try whatever driver you feel like going with there as every computer I tried had different experiences.
I myself use the 1.92.91 because they give me the highest framerates and look the best. |

Is it the GPU nVidia drivers, or the Asus motherboard nVidia chipset drivers?

maybe it could just be a screwed up mobo. your tempreatures are ok. and norton is bad... but not THAT bad. ive used it before and i didnt notice any difference in system performances when i had that, or the current AVG.. at least not much or anything close to what you describe for that matter. either a screwed up mobo or a screwed up power supply. wither one.. drivers i dont think will usually give you blue screens or restarts..

Mike | Sorry about that Mike........that was not my intentions. Honestly, It was late and I was tired. I didn't have my glasses on and for some reason I thought you were talking about having an amd..........so my intention was not to bring flaming........I just wanted to see if the AMD guys would flock to the problem and try to fix it..........lol
When I realized my mistake you can see that I edited it out........go back to the same message and look.
Again.......my apologies.......my intentions were for positive. |
