If anyone can help me with this issue please let me know. My friend has a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ110 laptop, and he's having some issues with his windows clock. He'll set it, and the time will remain accurate for about an hour or two, and then the hour suddenly goes back 2 hours, or an hour, depending on how it feels. The minutes remain accurate though. He had XP and it was doing this, and recently upgraded to Vista and it's still doing it.
I've tried resetting his motherboard BIOS to its defaults but it does nothing. What I have noticed is that even when I set the motherboard clock, that too will be off when I go back into it after it fucks up. I'm thinking it's the mobo battery, but the laptop's only a year old, so I can't see how it went dead so fast. I've also heard that this issue occurs when APM is enabled, but there's no option to disable/enable it in the BIOS...it doesn't even say it.
Is it a virus, or the effect of some program? Any help would be appreciated. We are on a college campus btw, so the internet time function doesn't function since we're firewalled.
The time zone is accurate, and the computer is up to date.

Check the windows time zone settings! Also, make sure you have the latest updates (due to some changes to when daylights savings time is applied). |

Nothing bad that I can see. Try this, right-click on the clock in taskbar > Adjust Time and Date > click "Time Zone" tab and uncheck "Automatically adjust clock for Daylight Saving Time". |

Programs that use lots of interrupts can get the OS and RTC out of sync. Some fancy screen savers have been known to do that. Or it can be set to the wrong time zone and it resets to some network time if online. Or it could be a combination of that and not being updated for the new Daylight Savings time. Patches for most versions of Windows are on the M$ site.

Like I said, the time zone is set right. It doesn't sync with internet time because the campus firewall prevents it from doing so. I had him disconnect from the internet for a few hours and it still did it, so it's not setting itself to any sort of network time.
He's also not running any fancy screen savers. The most elaborate program he runs is MS Word. I ran spybotsd, adaware, and hijack, and they haven't done anything. I'm starting to think the CMOS battery is fucked up. |

I didn't say that The time zone was incorrectly set..........I said........there is an update at Microsoft for the time zone controller in XP. Information on time loss on the computers system clock in the Microsoft® Windows® XP operating system.
Follow this procedure to troubleshoot time loss on the computers system clock in the Microsoft® Windows® XP operating system. - Reset the BIOS defaults of the computer.
- Set the correct time in the operating system.
- Turn off the computer. NOTE: Leave the computer off for at least 10 minutes.
- Turn on the computer.
- Check the system time. NOTE: If the system time is incorrect the CMOS battery may need to be replaced.
I went to Sony support........I noticed two things.........the bios is due for an update. and Sony has a recall on some of the batteries from that model run........You may want to check on that........I'm talking about the one that powers up the laptop.......its unrealated......but something to take note of.........the batteries are causing overheating problems.....which may account for a bad cmos battery. |
