Vaio Problem That Makes No Sense
Ok heres the deal. I got ahold of a Sony Vaio SRX99 notebook computer. The first thing I did was wipe it clean and loaded a new OS which is Windows XP Pro w/SP2. Everything is fine at this point but heres where it gets weird after updating Windows through Windows Update the computer will work fine for a week then all of the sudden I restart the computer and right when I log into Windows I get messages saying stuff like explorer.exe has encountered an problem and needs to close supplying the offset of fe9ed475 or logon UI has encountered an problem and needs to close. So my common sense tells me to open cmd and run chkdsk /f /r and restart well chkdsk finds nothing wrong and the computer restarts and I log in to expect the errors again and to my supprise no problems what so ever but I restart no matter if I've made changes or anything and the problems come back run a chkdsk /f /r again no problems log back in no problems. This has bothered me since I got this thing. The memory is new the hard drive is new everything is installed correctly no driver issues no spyware no adware no programs installed other then what came with windows xp pro retail and no viruses. I just don't get it any insite to help me fix this problem would be greatly appreciated. My tech level is professional I repair computers for a living so all the little things can probably be ignored at this point. If you need anything from me to help diagnose this let me know I'll hand it over no questions asked I need this working ASAP.
Thanks

You don't mention testing the HD with the manufacturer diagnostic tool or the RAM with Memtest..... have you done that also ? Even if it's new (RAM and HD) it happen that there is problems with them but you probably already know that...

If it was a ram problem it wouldnt go away when using chkdsk and I've run several tests on the hard drive and viewed the S.M.A.R.T. info and its 100% working properly no problems there.

In your explanation you mention that "after" updating Windows about a week later you started to have problems.
I'm trying to think about the way i'll go if it's happening to me. I also repair computers for a living
There is a few things that i'm thinking about right now, don't know if it will help you:
- Motherboard issue
- Corrupted XP installation
- Driver issue, removing and reinstalling them to see if it is one of them
- Corrupted updates
- Anti Virus causing problems
To make sure that everything is clean i scan the computers with Ad Aware, Spybot and i always create a log with Hijack This and verify it online.
Like i say, it is some of the options that i'm thinking about right now. I'm trying to avoid formatting and reinstalling when it's possible.
Good Luck

I've concidered all those possibilities but in the end they all turn up A+ and working. The windows updates arent the problem I would notice a problem sooner then a week if they were. spyware is non-existent being I dont use this computer for internet and viruses dont exist on it at all and never have. I don't have a virus scan installed since my last reformat(2 weeks ago). Ive installed the OS several times on this machine and each time I've had a problem ive tested this disk on hundreds of other computers and every one installs flawlessly. The drivers excluding mouse and video are all generic and and all of them are working fine. Im going to test the motherboard today and hopefully it shows me something otherwise im back to square 1. Thanks for the reply if you can think of anything else let me know.

Ok, not the motherboard.
Well, if you already reinstall XP on this notebook numerous time and there is always issues reinstalling is not an option anymore.
I can't thing of anything else rather than a hardware issue.
I'll keep thinking about it and if i see the light at the end of the tunnel you'll be the first one to know.
I hope that maybe someone else can also get involve in this thread, more ideas and more chances to solve this.
