There were 3 things I was doing before my comp was infected: Looking up an episode list for Naruto, since Cartoon Network stopped showing it in the afternoons, checking my e-mail on aol, and playing Zombie Masters Half Life 2 mod after work. After playing the game, AVG started going nuts, I quarantined six things in rapid succession, then all was calm. After which, every minute to the second, pop-ups to random internet sites would come up and an anti virus software called Winvirus 2007 started scanning my computer for viruses. I couldn't even stop it from doing that and I never even installed the program it just installed itself!
When I rebooted the computer, windows would load up, but it would not show the desktop icons, or the blue bar at the bottom of the screen - just the wallpaper and mouse. I press control alt delete and I could see the task manager, but nothing else.
3rd time reboot and I was able to get to desktop, but the random popups kept going.
4th time reboot and windows XP will not start at all. The computer I'm using has the same thing listed in AVG as a problem - ntoskrnl.exe change.
On the computer that had the problems, AVG quarantined everything, but it still messed up. I even used the back up copy of ntoskrnl.exe and replaced it, but the problem still kept coming up. I wasn't even able to delete anything, because it kept giving error messages saying I didn't have the proper access rights to do it, but I have administrative access!
Then I did research on what was going on and I got a name for it which is W32.FunLove.4099 Virus. The computer I'm currently using is not behaving like the one that just died, but I'm afraid rebooting it would change that.
What antivirus software will absolutely get rid of this without spending a lot of money? I'm using windows XP professional SP2, AMD Athlon XP 2200+ 1.8 Ghz, System model M848A. I don't know if this is all information that is needed, but all I know is the dxdiag thing.
