DVD combo drive will not recognize DVD's

My roommate has an HP zv5000 notebook PC and when he tries reading DVD the computer will access the drive but it appears that there is nothing on the disk.

the drive is either a hitachi or LG (google search turned up both) and here is the model number:

HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4241N

CD are recognized.

Most likely you will need the firmware update for your DVD drive. You can download it by going here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...385148&lang=en

hey thanks that was one of the first things that i tried but it did not appear that dell had the correct firmware. None the less we tried each one and none of them worked. It is possible that I did not go about the update correctly.
