Scenario:
In the afternoon,
Chattin with GF on phone,
Statement made: "Odd, I smell something burning."
Statement made: "What is it?"
Statement made: "I don't know.....now why did my computer just shut down?"
Statement made: "D'oh!!!"
Later that night,
No lingering smells for clues,
Attempts boot.....nothing
Disconnects all PSU connectors from board, tries PSU under power for any signs of life....Nothing
Assumption: PSU is fried
Next day,
Orders new PSU (from newegg, of course)
Today,
PSU will arrive
Question to the forum:
Does it sound like the PSU torched itself and went dead nicely or
do you believe I will find further crispy components on the board?
Physical inspection garnered no clues. |

Good scenario! Glad you still remembered all those conversation in detail.
Most probably, yes. If it was toasted, you could smell the smoke from it was coming from. Normally, I don't think you can see any smoke coming from it but you can smell them 
PSU may seem overpowered.

Those better be word for word quotes!
Since it sounds like the computer was Idling when the PSU died, I wouldnt think any other components were damaged. But theres definetly a possibilty. Only 1 way to find out: Plug it in and flip the switch.
Was it a generic PSU? | |

Results:
New PSU arrives
Remove old PSU
Install new PSU
Plug in, switch on, power switch hit
Fan goes on...thats good
video to monitor...better still
Knows cpu...ok
counts off memory...excellent
Lists hard drives.....Ha...ha...
Hangs....huh? 
ummm lets try that again....
.......hangs....no way!!! 
one more time.......
......hangs.......See, life isn't made to be simple....I'm gonna have to take this whole #@*& thing apart to find out whats wrong.......days of testing individual components...........WAAAAAA!!!!! 
Huh?, oh.....ummm no power to CDrom...  ....ok um I guess that plug goes here.
Reboot...
Lights...
Camera...
Action.....
".....and they all lived happily ever after"
