| E-machines 770 non starter.
Hi ppl
A friend of mine asked me to look at a comp that would not boot..totally dead.
True enough, it was. So I connected up a spare PSU to the board, including the 4 pin square plug and one to the hdd. When I switch on the psu at the back the psu fan spins and also the cpu fan spins straight away, but the comp will not start from the front switch. Nothing at all happens when I use the front switch but the cpu fan still spins.
Not sure what the next logical step to test for other failures would be.
The mobo is a TriGem Imperial IM 845G, 2.4 Intel P., and 256 meg DDR.
Any input would be appreciated.
Cheers
Steve.

Check for obvious defects such as bulging or split capacitors, badly burned patches around the PSU sockets and voltage regulators on the motherboard and similar stuff. Then strip it down to a minimal system, one strip of memory no drives, and built-in graphics if it has the capability. If it works, add the HDD, then other items, one at a time.
Before that, hold the power switch for over 4 seconds to make sure the PSU switches off. If it doesn't, either your spare is not working properly, the switch is not connected to the mobo or has failed, or the mobo is dying.

That vintage of emachine is fairly 'notorious' for having the PSU fail & take the mobo with it. |

Looked at the things suggested by Paul9, no evidence of bulging caps or any scorching. I took out the cpu, no evidence on or around it of any overheating issues. As JLK suggest, and searching for issues concerning the emachines setup, it looks as thought the psu and board are both dead.
Thanks for the input.

eMachines are so good for business; I think everybody should have one. |

Sorry to hear that ,seems like a very common fault with that psu/mobo combo.
Just looking to replace the board with something similar but more reliable

Well all the best, I've just just taken the HDD out and placed it in a caddy to see if I can access it via another computer, but it seems dead, is yours working?

Yeah, the hdd works ok...is yours dead or just an " access is denied " message?
