| .NET Framework installation error in XP
I was messing with the registry and deleted entries on the .net framework because I had tried to uninstall the previous version and get v3.0 as the latest. Problem now is, I don't know why it won't let me install it and it pops up with an error when I do the Windows Update,
"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter alternate path to a folder containing the installation package
'NDP20-KB917283-X86.msp' in the box below."
Clicking okay says it can't find the location of the file in
C:\DOCUME~1\MYUSERNAME~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ZNW1FE\NDP2 0-KB917283-X86.msp
I'm stumped, did I screw anything up pretty badly? How am I to get this installer package again?
Also, something else annoying, it somehow STILL thinks I have the .NET framework v2.0 since Windows Update says it found a High Priority security update for it, and I pretty much deleted the .NET folder that was located in C:\WINDOWS, but I believe some parts of it are still left in the registry. |

It still won't let me install the .NET framework v3.0 and says it has encountered a problem and needs to close and the error signature points to servicemodelreg.exe. I think the registry needs cleaning again? But this time not so much where I had it give me that network resource unavailable error because it couldn't locate this installer package. I just need to know what entries to delete if needed. |

make sure that your security software is disabled completely before attempting the install.
did you try creating a new admin account on the computer and doing the install in that? could be something obscure wrong with your user account privileges that you are not aware of.
use the windows installer cleanup to remove anything left over in the Add/Remove Programs control panel for the .net stuff... then, go to Start->Run, type in "%temp%" and click OK. select all files in here and delete them. then run the .net 3.0 uninstaller and reboot. then, try re-installing the .net framework redistributable from the link above.
also, check the known problems with installation to make sure nothing there is causing the problem for you.

HTH | There was nothing in Add/Remove on the .NET framework since I had it previously cleaned before but I tried the Windows Installer Cleaner anyways and it only removed a Framework v2.0 entry, the .NET v3.0 uninstaller said it wasn't needed since it couldn't find any files to uninstall. Then, I also tried to re-install using the link and still get an installation error. I believe I DO need v2.0 installed since 3.0 is like an extension to it. But now it's screwed up and need an installer of that because in Windows Update it must check my registry since it still thinks I have Framework v2.0 because it offers me the Service Pack 1 for it. |
