I want to add an old (1999) SIS Pci video card to my dell computer at work running XP for dual monitor support.
Will XP recognize the card and automatically instal drivers? I can't find a brand name on the card. If I need to search for drivers should I use the numbers on the chip marked SIS. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
As I recall installing dual Video Cards is actually not too easy, it would be far easier if you could get a different vid card with two ports.
That said, Windows should detect the second videocard, but it may be rather difficult getting it set up.
Chances are it will work with Windows Safe Mode (for lack of a better term) drivers.
Also, chances are it's digitally signed by Microsoft, which means the drivers are in the Windows Update Database.
Soooo, when the Found New Hardware Wizard pops up, select Intall Hardware automatically, then select "connnect to Windows Update to search for driver", something like that.
It should work fine for 2D applications, won't handle video or FPS game worth a damn.
Here's a pretty good tutorial compliments of Viewsonic, to help you set up multiple monitors. Startin ya out on Step 3, after vid cards are installed:
