| WinRAR : Forgotten my password
Hi
I have my private work compressed into one Winrar file (s). I stored it and set the password, so that when my friends wanted to browse it, they have to get my permission first.
But two days ago, I accidentally forgot the password This is so really not cool.
I couldn't afford to loose it. All my important files and particulars are all in there.
With your guys help, is there anyway at all that I could open the Winrar file?
Please help and thanks.
p/s : Every little help is a big help for me.

In order to crack the winRar file you need to run a crack program. Knowing anything about waht the password was will help. Unfortunately, WinRar uses AES 128 , so you may never be able to crack the folder anytime soon.
Your better off with a company that can employ the power of several servers http://www.disklabs.com/computer-for...d-cracking.asp
How complicated is the password? Does it contain numbers, letter or symbols? For that matter any unicode characters? I could give it a shot. I have several cracking programs.

Woow...that's good. It's just letters but it has no meanings For example, it is like "LPOKEMONTAGE", something like that.
I normally kept my important files in a WinRar because obviously we share files through our building network.
The problem with my this WinRar that I have forgotten its password is because I have change its password twice since some of my friends somehow manage to crack it. So I tend to make the password more difficult. It was for fun actually until then I realize that WinRar is making fun of me - I forgot the password
I try your link and will PM you if I have had any problems.
Thanks so much for you guys help. |

Why don't you just keep the stuff on a USB disk and keep it with you? |

Search Google for WinRar cracking. A free trial may crack the folder if it doesn't exceed the limits imposed on the trial software.
If the password is only letters then that is good. If it's as long as your example above it will take a while.
For your stuff I would look into Truecrypt. That way you can backup the header and always restore it. Which means the changed password is useless becuse you are the administrator of the encrypted contents. Just don't lose the 1024 bit header. Truecrypt also allows you to use keyfiles. This means you don't have to use a password. You would specify what files are used to encrypt the data. The first 1024 bits of those files are used. I use a couple of .jpg's and a password. I once used .mp3's, but knowing .mp3 files can become corrupt I stopped using them. Of course a key file can be on a disk consequently so can the Truecrypt container. If it is on a disk then writing to it is impossible without the aid of DLA or some other drag to disk implication. I have tried this and it's kinda buggy.
Those files can be placed in a Truecrypt container which can be used off an USB stick. Read the manual on Truecrypt if you decide to use i!

See if your friends have still got a copy of the file either unzipped or with an old password on which they know.
/Edit. Oops. Old thread.
