trying to reformat

can anyone tell me what disk I/0 error means?

well the context of the error would help all of us out

disk I/O error basically means it had an error eithe reading or writing (input or output) to the disk in question. Where or when are you recieving this error? Are you trying to turn on your computer?

no i am trying to reformat a hdd for a 1996 e-machines 433i it is a 466mhz 40 gig hdd os is windows 98se.

where does this error occur then? Is it just when the PC turns on or is in the OS
