Is Optimum in *your* apartment or a neighbors?
If it's in your apt, all you need is a router to connect to the modem. You connect the PS2 to the router.
If you're "borrowing" the wireless feed from your neighbor, you have to use ICS: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/

In other words, it's not your Internet connection.
No - you have to connect the PS2 either directly to the router or use ICS. Please read the page I linked you to. Connect the laptop to the PS2 as they say. |

That's right. When properly set up, ICS basically makes your laptop into a router. Keep in mind that the cable you use *must* be a crossover cable or you must use a basic Ethernet hub to put in the line between your laptop and the PS2. A regular cable will not work from PC to PS2. |

A hub is a box with at least 4 Ethernet ports. It's for connecting multiple PCs on a local network.
If you have any questions about the terms I use, please Google them. You can get your answer a lot faster that way.
I will say this (again) - to connect any two Ethernet adapters, you need a special crossover cable unless you use a hub or switch in the path. Please Google:
Ethernet crossover cable
Ethernet hub
Ethernet switch
That site I gave you has info on all of these items. Please look it over better.
