No response to the modem

Hello,

having a problem with a modem, believed to be an ISA modem if I remember right!
"No response to the modem" error. We've tried uninstalling, rebooting and it installs the modem but still comes up unresponsive. Can you think of other things we can try?

Thanks!

Hmmmm ... Can't think of anything from your description. Maybe more info would help. Is the modem showing up in device manager, and is it assigned a COM port?? Did you install the manufacturer's driver or a generic Windows driver?? What OS?? Did you try it in a different computer??

Ok, well the modem was working fine the other night, and no I did not try another puter (this is vass's wife..lol It's my mom's machine and I am up here and he is down there) I would put it in my machine but my machine has a habit of crashing out my modem if it is taken out, so I really don't want to do it unless I HAVE to.
She is using Win 98 (and I think it is second edition)
The modem IS showing up in the device manager, and when you try and go to the properties, it says it cannot find a modem, but it will let me try to install it and says it is there. It is in COM 2, which is where it has always been. We used the generic drive as I have NO idea what type of modem it is and we did not get drivers with it (crappy sales people!) If you have anymore suggestions, that would be great. Thanks!!

Try refreshing your BIOS. Go into it, just check the settings, then SAVE when exiting.

You could try going to the device manager, removing the com ports (and the modem if it is seen there). Then do a restart and let it reinstall. Sometimes a system just needs to get the resources nudged a bit.
This had best be done one step at a time but you might relocate the card to another isa slot if that is doable for you.

Also, and maybe this should have been up top, you might try unchecking the box that says "use automatic settings" in the resource properties (device manager) then select the first "logical configuration" in the 'settings based on' selection. That will force the modem to known correct resources but may cause other problems with other components. If you see a conflict shown - below - in that config with an empty com port ONLY, go for it.
