I'm having a problem running F.E.A.R. When I first installed it, it worked fine. Now, it doesn't work, and I now cannot run ANY games on my comp. It's like it's been bogged down after I installed FEAR. I also tried to install Counter Strike: Source, and it worked for one day. It came back with hl2.exe has created errors and must close. And now none of my steam games that use hl2.exe don't work. What I think happened is the system32 got screwed by installing FEAR (during which I installed directx 9.0c). I think the directx messed it up. So could someone help me? |

The Fear, your computer has it.

Wow...your superb advice simply amazes me!
Welcome to TechIMO, bry.
I would start by checking your event viewer for errors related to your game crashes...if you don't know the dates/times of the crashes, try to run it again and take notice of the time.
The Event Viewer can be accessed by clicking Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer or by accessing the Computer Management console and clicking Event Viewer. (An easy way to get to the Computer Management console is to right-click on My Computer and select Manage.) I would pay particular attention to your application and system logs. Feel free to post back any error details as we can help you troubleshoot from there.

I saw a motivational poster on it, and I knew I had to use it once in my life or my life would be worthless.
I knew I couldn't help the situation, all I know is hardware related.... I didn't even know about event viewer. |

I would consider using System Restore soon. That would reverse any DirectX trouble.
It's more likely that this is a video problem. Uninstall your video drivers, reboot and reinstall if System Restore fails. Do the same for your sound drivers if that doesn't help.
There is no substitute for backing up your PC. Hard drives are really huge and really cheap these days. Get a spare (internal or external) and start backing up with Acronis True Image, Norton Save and Restore or Paragon Drive Backup - whichever is on sale this week.
