About a week ago the kids noticed the kitchen computer was on but couldn't get a display. Of course I figure a vid card so no big deal. The machine is as follows:
Tyan 1598C SS7 mainboard w/ on-board sound
K6-3 450+
128 MB PC100 Kingston VRAM
Diamond Fusion (Banshee) AGP video card
Phillips CD-RW
Generic 52X CD-ROM
This is what I've done so far:
Changed to know-good vid card
Changed monitors
changed to different CPU
changed to different RAM
All changes have netted no change in the outcome.
When the power button is pushed all lights come on, fans and drives spin up and the power LED lights on the computer but I get no video signal. Any suggestions? |

Did you try resetting the BIOS at all, JOOC? Does it beep at all? Sounds like the BIOS decided to not want to work to me... But then again, I'm like, not smart.

Does the computer POST? Does it do that single beep I mean. Also, does the HDD light stay on ? I've that same sort of thing happen and what it was was the PSU. Darn thing poops out on me all the time. maybe Im buying crappy brands...or maybe I need something from APCs line of products

Try a PCI vid card instead of AGP, just to make sure the AGP's not kaput.
Also, clear the mobo CMOS to reset everything to see if it is a mobo related corruption. Doesn't sound like power if everything runs, but still I'd change to a know good PS as PS problmes can cause all kinds of screwy things.
Hard one to troubleshoot sometimes with no video. No beeps I presume? Try removing the RAM and see if you get beeps (not all BIOses beep, but it's worth a shot to see if the board does or not).
Good luck

I'm getting no POST beep and the hdd drive light does not stay on. I was suspecting the PSU myself. I mean, otherthan the mobo, that's all that's left! At least it's not one of my precious K6-3/450+'s! |

Might've lost your motherboard. I *coughs* fried my first one, and those were the symptoms. The hard drive would come on, fans would spin, lights would glow, but no vid output. I am not sure how to test to see if it really is your board, other than to take it into a computer repair place. Hope that helped! -Jon

If you take out ALL the cards in the computer and try to start it up does it even beep then? If not then its either the PSU or the mobo. Easy to trouble shoot something when there is nothing else in the computer I'd say try swapping the PSU first....as I said it happens alot to me and a PSU does the trick right away |

PSU didn't do the trick. I fear the worst. Hopefully this motherboard is still under warranty. I did notice the CPU fan was locked up so I'm wondering if that may have backed up into the motherboard and burned something up? Who knows? Anyway, thanks for the help people.

If the cpu fan was dead then the cpu overheated and shorted out. The mobo may be damaged by the heat, or a voltage regulator on the mobo may have failed.
I do think it's the mobo (you did change the cpu I think). That's too bad |
