Unhappy
stop code Windows XP Home Edition

I have an old Dell Dimension 2400 with Windows XP Home Edition. I am trying to get some data off it. When I start it goes to the black screen with the choices of normal mode, safe mode, etc., all of which show Windows trying to boot but ending up with a blue screen with the message "Unmountable_Boot_Volume" and the following stop codes: 0x000000ED (0x81B4F5F0,0xC0000006,0x00000000,0x00000000). I have tried booting with the Windows XP disk in the CD drive, but same result. I have seen lots of messages to get to the Recovery Console when I get the Welcome to setup message, but I never get there, always straight back to the blue screen. Neither Microsoft's nor Dell's support sites address this.

Any ideas?

Are you truly booting off of the CD? Likely you will need to go into the BIOS and change the boot options to put the CD drive as the first boot drive then the hard drive as the second. There is a good chance the hard drive is bad but it might be worthwhile to remove it and hook it up to a working PC to verify.

thanks

Thanks for the advice. I changed the boot order in the BIOS and was able to boot from the CD, then fix the boot problem and access my data.
