Team Fortress 2 / Vista startup issue

Hi folks.

I'm running vista and asus 4850. When I try to start TF2 I get all the startup splashes, like the valve guy, then I get a looooong period of flashing between the desktop and a blank black screen with a white arrow mouse cursor. If a bang esc and a few other screens TF2 evenually starts and runs perfectly. Any ideas? Thanks.

Vista Home 32bit, intel core-duo 2k, 3gigs ram. I have the lateset catalyst drivers installed. I also have the latest mobo drivers in. I'm using an Xi-FI extreme music with the latest drives from creative.

Creative has caused problems that I am still trying to fix, there is an annoying "crackling" sound on some apps such as ITunes. May be related, I dunno.
