| ANOTHER UBV PROBLEM, DIFFERENT SENARIO
HEY GUYS,
I'VE BEEN READING FORUM AFTER FORUM FOR THE LAST WEEK NOW, NONE OF WHICH FITS MY SCENARIO. JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, WHEN I TRY TO BOOT I GET THE FAMOUS UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME SCREEN OF DEATH. I TRIED THE INSTALL CD BUT NEVER GET PAST THE PART WHERE IT SAYS "SETUP IS NOW STARTING WINDOWS", I STILL GET THE BLUE SCREEN. SO NOT WANTING TO BE PATIENT, I BOUGHT A NEW HARD DRIVE ON EBAY THINKING MINE WAS BAD. AFTER INSTALLING THE NEW HARD DRIVE AND INSERTING THE XP CD, I GET THE SAME EXACT UBV BLUE SCREEN. AHHHHH!!!! NEW BLANK HARD DRIVE AND STILL SAME THING! ALSO I RAN THE DIAGNOSTIC PROGRAM BUILT INTO THE BIOS OF MY DELL D600, AND IT GAVE ME A DST ERROR ON THE ORIGINAL HARD DRIVE BUT NOT THE NEW ONE.
I HAVE BEEN READING A LOT ABOUT THIS AND READ SOME KIND OF 40 TO 80 PIN PROBLEM....
SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!!! |

Welcome to TechIMO!
First, please stop with the CAPS. It makes you seem to be yelling, which could be seen as rude.
At what exact point does this error show up? There are two distinct phases when setting up Windows. There is the first part where you select the drive and install the files and then there's phase two where the PC restarts and Windows tries to actually start by itself.
Phase one or two?
Do you have a SATA drive?
Do you have a special card that your hard drive is connected to?
Is the new drive set up as drive 1 or Master?
Did you remove the old drive or just add the new one to the mix?

Sorry about the CAPS.
The UBV Blue screen appears just after setup loads drivers and setup files. Says Setup Is Starting Windows, then UBV Blue Screen.
It is not an SATA Drive.
The laptop is a Dell D600, here are the specs on the hard drive: Specifications: ·Manufacturer Hitachi ·Part Number: 08K0852 ·Rotational Speed 4200 RPM ·Capacity 40GB ·Interface ATA/IDE ·Form factor width - 2.5 ·Form factor height 9.5MM ·System Type Laptop, Notebook it is the only drive in the computer. Any Suggestions? |

Just to be perfectly clear, this is happening before the point where you press F8 to accept the legal agreement?
Do you ever get to see the hard drive partitions and choose a place to install?

On the original hard drive I can get passed the f8 screen where it shows Windows XP Copy Write and the little bar that scrolls across the screen, about 5 seconds into it is when I get the UBV screen.
But to answer your question, I cannot get to the part where it asks to hit f8 to accept agreement.
I've tried every f8 boot option, neither of which works.
New hard drive doesn't make it that far of course because it is blank.
I cannot get to the screen that shows partitions on either drive, even when I try install disc on original hard drive. (but, original hard drive has Windows XP Home and the install cd I am using is XP Pro.) |

This sounds like you have a controler problem. I am also going to assume that this is out of warranty since your asking here. You may need to try both your old and new hard drive in another system to ensure they are not the cause of the problem. IF they test fine, then your Mobo is bad and is not reading/writing the information from/to your drive properly I would gather. |

I hope that this Pro "upgrade" CD is genuine. A badly copied CD would cause this problem. |

talks about a 40-wire cable and 80-wire UDMA... my hard drive does have an adapter.... think that could be it? |
