| New drive not being picked up
I have just installed a 1TB Hitachi Drive through SATA. When powering up, I was expecting Vista to install the driva automatically or at least tell me its there. But nothing happened, it doesn't show up in My Comp or disk management, it shows up in BIOS though.
What needs to be done?
-----------------------------------------------------
SOLUTION UPDATE!
After 3 hard weeks of research it appears that SERVICE PACK 1 for Vista has prevented this HD from being picked up. I was advised to uninstall SP1 from my system in the hope for Vista to recognise the two drive. I can finally say that this is the solution to this issue!
Though, having said that, I don't know if I can install SP1 again now that I have them working. I might give it a go for experimental sake. - Once you have fully uninstalled SP1go to device manager and find the unknown device in the list
- Right click, and update the drivers. Search for drivers on your PC and point the PC to search C: including subfolders
- It will take a few minutes and once that is complete, Vista will then finally recognise that unknown device as a Hard Drive
- From there, it will add that device to the list of disk drives, you will now be able to see the drive in computer management
- Begin to activate set up partition however you see fit.
- Once it's all formatted, it will show in My Computer.

Does it appear in Device Manager?
Have you scrolled down in Disk Management? New drives are often at the botton.

Completely nothing. I can't see it anywhere, it's like there isn't any other drive connected to it. But it shows it in the BIOS, is there anything I need to do in the BIOS.... |

Is the SATA power connected?
Try setting the jumper on the rear to SATA 1. |

Yes it's all connected, it's the first time I connected a SATA drive, but as it is being picked up in BIOS I guess the PC sees it there.
Jumpers? I'm not sure if I saw any, does the jumper slave and master thing work as the same like the old IDE drives? |

You're going to have to remove the drive. There is a compatibility jumper on the rear to allow it to work with older motherboards. |

I'll take a look, I suspect my first drive is in master and the other needs to be in slave...
But its a new mobo, just bought the PC last year. |

Make sure that the SATA controller is enabled in BIOS setup. In there, you may find a setting to change modes for SATA. Whatever it's set at, change it. I can't download the manual because Asus's site is a mess. |

How do I know what the SATA controller is, how do I access it - is there a standardised way?
I have the manual to hand, I'll look it up. But because one of my drives are already enabled, doesn't it count for the same for all other future drives, or is it on a port by port basis? |
