I have a toshiba satellite A100/A105 series laptop. recently I went to turn it on and all the power died. I plugged it in thinking it was out of battery but nothing happened. When the electrical cable is plugged a ticking noise is heard. No power comes on and none of the signal lights go on. The cable brick is good I've tested the power on it. Any suggestions? |

Welcome to TechIMO!
You should start your own thread, the OP didn't get a response with his description.
It really could be anything, The sound is either a fan or your Hard Drive.
For a desktop you substitute parts or try your parts in another computer. With a Laptop you have to do the same thing, but except for hard drives CPU,and memory, it is harder to find parts or another computer exactly the same. If it is not the HD, CPU, or Mem, the rest is pretty hard to fix.
Only a manufacturer would have a test device for their own laptops.

| Stroyal is probably right - ticking noises generally come from a hard drive or a fan. If you aren't familiar with the innards of a PC, find someone who is or take it in for service to avoid causing any additional damage. |

I hoped someone on this board would know
/otherwise why is this board here
// anybody have a Toshiba service manual?
/// a five-year-old 'low end' laptop isn't worth anything but a cheap fix
//// A computer that won't start = no spining HD, no spinning fan
//// BTW: sorry if I am wasting everbody's time |

Maybe I wasn't clear enough.
The only way to find out what is wrong is to try, your CPU, HD, and memory in another computer, or try known good parts in your computer. If all the parts check out it's the motherboard.
This is how any computer shop would do it, there is no quick diagnosis in a Toshiba service manual.
You are not wasting our time, that's what we are here for, but if you don't want to or are unable to follow our advice, that is no reason to question what we are here for. |

As stryoal said, there are no shortcuts. |

If you are looking for manuals on the Toshiba they have a great website to find all the info on their products. I had an older Toshiba Tecra and it finally died where it would not boot at all. Toshiba said that it needed to be sent in for internal files to be put in something like the Bios that was not available to general public. |

If it was me I would take off the keyboard area and try to narrow down where the clicking is coming from.
Harddrives usually click, fans usually just stop. |
