CD/DVD Rom drive not working

Hi there,

It would be great if someone could shed some light on this problem I have with my Dell Inspiron 5160 dvd rom drive. It's model description is crx830e and I have updated the latest firmware but still I cannot burn files using the drive. I'm not sure if this problem is related to updating my service pack from 2 to 3 recently as it was working up till then. It is reading disc's with information on them and it recognises a blank disc but tells me everytime I insert a blank disc that it is full or not writable. I have tried using nero and the burn directly to drive facility in windows. I have tired using two different types of disc's. Has anyone come accross this problem when updating to sp3? Do I need to reinstall the driver or something? Any help would be much appreciated, i'm not in IT but know a little bit and would be keen to resolve this problem my self. If ya need other info pls shout, thanks alot. Phil

Start > Run > Services.exe > Ok.

Look for IMAPI service. Makes sure that it is running and set to Automatic.

The first thing to do would be to try Dell's standard troubleshooting steps for CD/DVD drives. Obviously, you've already done the firmware.

Since Nero also is not working, that rules out the IMAPI service as the primary cause. It might also be worth deleting the upper and lower filters. After you do this, you may find it necessary to reinstall Nero if the program does not recognize your drive as a burner.

Let me know what you tried and what happened (something more than "that didn't work").

Good luck!
