reformat windows

how do I reformat windows to overwrite the windows I have now? I have the operating disc but everytime i try installing it, it just adds another operating system without deleting the old.

You didn't mention a Windows version. They are all a wee bit different.

I'll assume XP. After you select "Install", you are shown the drive layout. Delete all partitions there and then create a new one using either the whole drive or as much of it as you want to. Select that new partition and press Enter.

You really need to stop and read the whole screen. It's very easy to "assume" and hit that "Next" button. Don't do that until you read and understand.

Formating your drive and reinstalling Windows causes more problems that it fixes. There is ALWAYS something you forget to backup, whether its drivers or data. But if you have to...I'm taking a wild(very wild, forgive if i'm wrong) guess here that you are trying to reinstall Windows while you are logged into Windows. Remember to restart your PC and boot from Windows Installation cd. It will prompt you to format your drive (If it is Win XP). If it is an older version of Windows, you might need boot diskettes to get the installation going...
