Web client stopping No internet access

I have an IBM T43 laptop which is not connecting to the web or to other web related services e.g wireless printing.
The web client in services is set on automatic but always shows as stopping.
I have tried changing it to manual but this makes no difference.

The wireless connection shows that it is connected to the router.
The router works for other laptops on the network. So router is ok.

I have checked to see if there are any viruses running but it all looks legit.

I have sophos anti virus running which has been fine for the last 4 years.

I resently downloaded windows live one care to check to see if there were any viruses missed by Sophos. None showed up.
