| Power supply dying..or something else?
Hello!
I am looking for a little help diagnosing a symptom my computer has been having the past 2 months.
Problem started after I took my computer out of storage (which it had been in for 1 year). I should note that I have not changed my computer in any way prior to the problem starting, no new installs or hardware, only change was going in/out of stoarge. It started up okay the first time but I noticed that when I turn it off, the keyboard light stays on. Next time I went to start it up, the front CD drives blinked a few times and it sounded like it was trying to start up, but then it would stop and nothing. Nothing on the screen, no beeps, and I think no sound from the computer, but not positive.
After a few tries it did start up and I decided to just leave it on indefinitely until I could fix it. It's been two months, and in that time 2 more times I have done a regular restart just to refresh it and it wouldn't start up again immediately. (Both times it would start up again after leaving it alone for a few hours to a day).
At first I (being a novice) figured maybe it is the power supply, but it does still stay on for weeks on end, it doesn't crash or turn itself off, it only has issues when I turn it off or (try to) restart it.
I did read the "read before posting" thread but am not going to list all my specs in this post just because I think it's a general symptom not specific to my setup (my computer was just peachy before I had to put it in storage, so I guess something was damaged sitting in an un-climate controlled enviroment.. I'm an idiot, I know, hehe.
Does it sound like the power supply to you guys? Or the motherboard? If you do need/want more info about my system, let me know and I will post it, I hope this post isn't too annoying and describes the problem well enough!
Thanks! |

That does sound like a power supply issue. The power circuits are not providing enough juice at startup to keep the system running. I had one do that. It would take multiple attempts to start it up, but once it was running, it would be fine. I ended up getting a replacement after it completely refused to start one morning.

Thanks so much for the quick reply, that's the confirmation I was hoping for. Now I just have to update myself on power supply brands and off I go! |

We can help you with a new PSU. All we need to know are the specs of your computer and if it's a pre-built such as a Dell or Gateway, the model number would be helpful. |

Could be bad PSU, could be a failing motherboard as well. Check the capacitors around the CPU area on the motherboard, see if any are leaking or bulging. If they are, that's a sure sign of failure. Doesn't necessarily rule out a mobo problem if they're not though.
