I with ya Bill; don't be mad at me LOL
Guess I'm just thankful I'm careful enough to never need that CD; but probably wouldn't hurt to burn the iso and put it in the utility collection |

The CD is actually updated a few times a day, so it doesn't make a lot of sense to burn and store it. If you do, it will be outdated when you need it.

So we know that Aviras detections are not necessarily any better than say Norton, Trend or Spybot.
Granted these programs will not run on an overly infected pc that is locked down by some virus or malware. Have you compared Avira's "rescue" mode against other popular utilities in Safe/Clean mode? |

Safe Mode is not immune to infection. I have experienced quite a few infections that locked down Safe Mode too. It's no answer. That's why I mentioned it.
Actually, Antivir Pro is one of the most highly rated AV programs. It beats Norton and quite a few others. The Rescue CD uses the same set of definitions. AV-Comparatives
Hey - you can go ahead and try scanning in Safe Mode. It's your time. I'd rather just get it done. |

LMAO! No Bill I have given up safe mode long ago along with av. Unfortunately many of these AV vendors seem to claim that safe mode is the start opposed to having a solid rescue plan and you have to explain why they are wrong to the people you are trying to help. The least of which is that damn system restore.
Interestingly that is a great av comparison site that seems dead on with a quick look over! Sophos has a very high false positive indeed! F-Secure (free from many isp's for good reason) rates horribly
Thanks for the reading Bill! |

I agree! I have to use UBCD4win when I need to remove stuff that just want delete. Live CD's are the sht! Of course, using Linux in VMware may help too.. Meaning you probably wouldn't have the problem in the first place.
Here's something I have that might be of interest. WhoLockMe Explorer Extension v1.04 beta (NT-Win2K-XP) download page
I like Avira because it can detect stuff others may not have a definition for.. Something to think about when comparing virus scanners. Although it's sometimes a little slow on updating.

Well Bill I gave the Avira boot cd a run on two "clean" computers and was enamored at its speed.
Unfortunately it doesn't scan compressed files very well and was detecting some Steam files as encypted as I am sure some are but still confusing to recommend it to the not so savvy. The free download does not seem to be translated into engrish very well, lol.
All in all it detected everything in my test beds specific quarantine folders and went as far as to detect some of these newer rbots that I thought trend was going crazy (and alone) with.
All in all it leaves me compelled to try the suite and see if it is polished but alas I have to donate 7 bucks to the Auerbach Foundation? I look around their pages and it is clear they could use some better Engrish. Suddenly I feel less compelled, lol. |

So you're saying that it works great and is free, but you don't feel like singing it's praises? Maybe they should charge you a few bucks! |

No I was attempting to convey that I was impressed by the speed and wanted to give their whole suite a spin before I recommended it to people.
Its detections seem on par with three other programs I trust (ie it detected some emerging rbots that ONLY Trend has picked up on thus far) but seemingly does what all three need to do together Avira does alone.
I have downloaded the suite and plan on giving it a try. Avira's site wasn't as clear as Cnet. 30 day free trial is definitely a plus. |
