computer won't boot

i have an emachines computer running windows xp that won't boot. every time it gets to the black screen that says XP and is loading, the syatem reboots and enters an endless cycle. i can get it to boot in safe mode. i have tried to backup my data and and reinstall XP but that didn't help. this started happening about a week after i installed service pack 3, which might have something to do with it. can anyone help?

EMachines are known for really bad power supplies. You may want to replace yours.

If you're still getting a reboot loop, try pressing F8 repeatedly while the PC starts and selecting "Disable automatic restart on failure". You should then get a blue screen error. Note the error and report back here.

error message

the error says that the file <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll is missing or corrupt. where can i get a replacement for this file? i have already run system recovery and rebooted the OS. shouldn't that have fixed it? (I am running XP Media Center)

You have to use a Windows CD to perform a repair installation. Search Google for repair xp. The first hit will be Michael Stevens' site. Follow those steps.

Your system recovery failed. Perhaps you made the wrong selection?
