Error

I'm stationed in Japan and no one to help. I sent the computer to a repair shop out in town and they want to charge me $450. to replace a SD slot and not sure if the can help me retrieve my pictures. Could not really understand what they were saying.
When I turn my computer on I get this error:
Windows\System32\Config\System is missing or corrupt
I have the recovery discs but don't want to reformat until I retrieve my pictures. Please can you help. Thank you.

Its a Sony Vaio VGC-LT running windows XP

If it is XP, you should be able to reinstall without reformatting.

Easy

Get a second hard drive and install it.

Disconnect your old hard drive in order to keep it safe.

Use your recovery disks to re-install the OS.

Once that is done, reconnect your old hard drive and remove/backup your pictures and any other data you have.

This costs you the price of a hard drive and your time. If you can't get a hard drive over there for a good price then order one from the states, you will have to wait but that beats paying $450, that's insane.

Just read the specs of your system - Not so easy. Warranty???

Are you technically skilled?

Still get a second hard drive. Make sure you get the same kind of HD that is in your system. Go to Sony's website to verify the specs. It says that you can mount 2 hard drives in there but check to be sure. If not, get an external USB hard drive for the model HD you buy, and follow the same procedure.
