Can't get my PS2 controllers to work properly

Hi there

I have just been given a PS2 from a mate of mine but the 2 controllers are not working properly.

Only the analog and start buttons are working on both controllers. I can get into games and navigate around with the analog controls but that's it. so I don't think that both controllers can have the same problem.

The PS2 has been sitting in the box for a while, so I don't know if dust in the console could be causing this problem.

Does any one have any idea what the problem could be.
