dlp lamp crackling and popping during startup

i bought a dlp tv a year ago and was watching it a few weeks ago and the tv just shut off. i waited and the three lights on the front started blinking indicating that the lamp was defective, i have since ordered a new lamp and have replaced it. the tv was working fine for about a week and all of a sudden it shut off again. with the new bulb installed when i turn the tv on, when i remove the side cover i can see and hear the new bulb crackling and popping but never turns on and the 3 lights on the front dont flash, so i put the old one back in and 3 flashing lights but no crackling and popping. did i recieve a faulty lamp or is there another issue i should be aware of.
