| modem can't connect to iSP under XP
Ok. here's the problem. I have installed win XP to create a dual boot PC. I have setup a new internet connection in XP but when I tried connecting to my ISP it cannot establish a connection. From my win98 OS, my modem is labeled Generic 56K modem while in XP, it was detected as "Best Data Data modem". could this be the cause or just my connection setting?
please I need some help.

i recently ordered two of the best data v.92
xp detects them as generic 56k but if you load the drivers it will be correct (supposed to be safe to ignore the warning message)
of the two i bought only one works fine and the other i had to send in for rma it never would establish a connection
it would load operating system could see it worked fine in modem properties but would not establish a connection the other worked without any issues at all

Can your modem dial out anywhere? In other words, does it get a dial tone, dial the ISP's number, and then crash? Or will it not even get to the dial tone?
If it dials the ISP and then fails to connect, it may be that your ISP uses a connection script that won't work in XP. I've had that happen several times. Check with your ISP and see if they have XP setup instructions.

Bad news..
i've research in the web and found out about my modem's incompatibility with XP. you see, my modem is rockwell 56K with a conexant chipset and it's very bad luck for XP. XP detected it as "best data data fax modem" and said the device is working properly yet when dialing to the ISP, it just won't work.
So far, no updated drivers is still available (but i hope there is somewhere around) and I have to live with it. so, beware all you who own the same modem as i do.
Regards,
