Dell USB problem

Friend has newer Dell with USB ports only. Brought to me to see if I could reinstall system as had viris. When I put together and attemped to reinstall the keyboard and mouse (USB) will not activate to let you load or enter bios. F disked the hard drive in another machine-no problem with drive but still no USB. CD drive starts operating system but you cannot reach bios or tell OP what you want to do. Any ideas? Will adding PCI to PS2 card help or removing biod battery to reset bios work?

If the computer has a PS2 connector, I would try that. I would also check that the USB keyboard is functional by plugging it into another (working) computer and seeing wheter you can type with it.

It could be that the USB slots either aren't connected inside the case or have been disabled in the BIOS. Also, if you're using a wireless keyboard it normally wouldn't be usable until the OS has loaded.

Clearing CMOS should make it work. Unplug the PC and remove the motherboard battery for a few seconds.
