notebooks screens have a maximum brightness that you cannot exceed. Often, a notebook will lower the backlight when the unit is drawing from battery power to maximize the battery life. You can turn up and down the brightness by using the function key (fn) and tapping the "brighten" key, which looks like a little circle with an up arrow or triangle.
