old photos and files from e machine to new computer

i recently got back from iraq and while i was gone our old e machine t 1840 would only power up with a black screen. the power cpu light would constantly blink. my wife brought it to best buy and they said the mother board was bad. question 1 would be how can i get all of my files, pictures, etc from old xp to our new system with vista ?

Very simply done. If the motherboard is bad then the hard drive should still be good. Get another computer or use a friends, if they have the same hard drive connection you can hook up your hard drive as a secondary drive and access all the files (given they are both windows PC's)

Send a message via AIM to Rootstonian
And you can hook up the old drive to a external case.

If it's an "older" IDE drive, I have on the floor of my computer room an external drive case I was going to toss out (don't need it anymore). Put the IDE drive in, plug in the wall wart power supply, plug usb cable into comptuer and turn it on...Vista should recognize it.

If you want it, I'll send it to you for free since that is the least I could do for a man who sacrifices part of his life to protect mine.

If you are interested, send me a private message and we can discuss details of sending the external unit.
