| Box alive but monitor dead
Hello,
I built my first system ~6wks ago it was loads of fun. It worked great for about 4wks (just past the 30day warranty), but suddenly it completely stopped powering up (no fans, no beeps, no PSU fan, etc) I assumed it to be a failed PSU, but upon replacing the PSU, no change. So, after running down a few "troublshooting" lists I replaced the MoB which appears to have been the problem. (I should also mention that during the "fix" my montor was dropped..oops)
The good news is that it now powers up, everything sounds and looks good (fans, LEDs, HD, etc) EXCEPT the monitor won't do anything. The monitor is a nice shinny new 22 LCD that looks REAL sweet when run off another computer, but it has "no source" when connected to my running computer.
I first attempted to run the monitor off my new MoB or my video card, but no luck with either. I tried running it off the system after I removed the video card, but still no luck. I figure it can't be a driver problem with absolutely no life in the monitor. It also isn't the cable or the monitor (both work with other systems).
FYI: Here is the system (was running Ubuntu Ibex): Acer X223Wbd Black 22" MSI NX8600GT Twin Turbo GeForce 8600 GT 256MB CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) Western Digital Caviar GP WD5000AACS 500GB SAMSUNG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner APEVIA Black 500W ATX Media Center / HTPC Case AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ Brisbane 2.8GHz Foxconn A7GM-S AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
I really hope it isn't my new motherboard having problems. Any help would be appreciated.

How can you be so sure that the PC is working correctly when you can't "see" what's happening?
1. Is the hard drive LED flashing?
2. Do you hear the Windows welcome sound from the speakers?
If the answer is no to either question, assume it's the PC.
My guess is that you bought a weak or defective power supply because you didn't mention what you got.

Thanks for the quick reply. I love your icon. I have two PSU's but I am currently running the 500W standard that came with the case. However, I also have a 650W (COOLER MASTER Real Power Pro RS-650-ACAA-A1 650W) that I'll try when I get home. As for the sound, I'm running Ubuntu Ibex, but I'll try hooking up some speakers. I'm concerned that it isn't the PSU because it is a 500W and the HD sounds great on startup, all the right spinning sounds. Also, the DVD player opens up great and spins up nicely (by sound alone) when a DVD is inserted. I'll let you know what happens but if any one else has any other ideas, let me know. Thanks! |

I tried changing out the PSU...no change. Any other suggestions.
BTW, what do you mean by the HD LED flickering? My HD doesn't have an LED.
Thanks again. |

have you tried hooking your monitor into a different port on your video card? When you first start up the computer, can you even see the post screen display or is it just when you start going into the startup process for linux? Also, try hooking your monitor into the motherboard video port and see if you can get display that way as well.

Still nothing.
I had tried all different ports (MoB and video card) no luck.
The screen is entirely dead. Ie. had "no input". So I never see anything from the computer on the screen.

I've decided to send back the MoB for a replacement. If a replacement doesn't work all that is left is the CPU....I think. |

Sorry about the delay. I returned the MoB for replacement, but there is no change with the new MoB.
I figure since I am getting no post codes the CPU must be the problem. Time to find a new CPU |
