Power to PC on boot but no Monitor, Mouse or Keyboard
- Intel® Pentium® 4 processor 1.8 GHz, with 400 MHz frontside bus for a powerful CPU-to-memory connection
- 2 One Gig Kingston KVR333/1GR RAM
- 100.0 GB (7200 rpm) hard drive
- 16x maximum speed DVD-ROM drive (40x maximum speed CD-ROM)
- 24x10x40 CD-RW drive
- nVidia GeForce FX5700 512 MB video card
- Sound Blaster PCI
- 10/100 integrated network interface cardV
- IEEE 1394 (FireWire) interface and USB connections
- V.90 high-speed modem
- Windows XP Home Edition SP2
Last night while watching vids on YouTube my PC Froze.
Ctrl+Alt+Del would not work, neither would holding the power button.
I pulled the plug, let it cool down for a minute and turned it back on.
PC lights and fans come on, but boot up sequence does not engage, no initial beep.
No monitor, mouse or keyboard activity. The PC will stay powered up until I either pull the plug or hold the power button for 3 seconds.
I swapped out a known working PSU (same results), changed the MOBO battery (same results), and have replaced the hard drive with a known working hard drive (same results).
In the past I have had some issues with my Video Card and had some artifacts on the screen occasionally, I just don't feel that the VidCard will keep the mouse and keyboard from receiving power or the PC to initiate boot sequence.
My aunt had this problem about a month ago, and when she took her PC into the shop, they said that this issue had become common place and he had 3 PCs that week with the same problem.
Do you think this is the cause of a yet unknown virus and what can I do from here? I truly don't think my motherboard is bad, but it is almost 7 years old. Do MOBOs go without any forewarning like that?
Anyway, your input and help is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
PEACE,
GrnEydGuy aka Aaron

Whenever I had a mobo go bad my computer gradually slowed down then it died, or my system temp started to climb.
It does sound like a dead motherboard to me.Last edited by cksboy15; December 14th, 2008 at 03:41 PM.

Update
I swapped out new RAM (no progress).
Replaced Video Card (no progress).
My options are slowly dwindling here aren't they?
Well, I'm out of components to swap out.
Does anyone think I should try swapping Processors?
Thanks again

The chances of a dead processor are very low compared to a bad mobo. I only know about 4 people who have had a processor die on them.
just find a cheap board to put in your PC (only with the CPU) then if that doesn't work you have a bad CPU. If it is a bard return the cheap one and get a better one.

Well, thanks for your help cksboy15!
I am now putting all of my components onto a Shuttle AN35N Ultra v 1.1 as it is the only other board I have here.
This board is previously used so when I plug my components in do I need to tweak anything? I've replaced just about every other part but I have never had to build newly from the mobo up so I'll probably need some help.

Am I supposed to have a hard drive or anything else hooked up at all?
Or just the memory and processor and in this case video card?
Thanks much.

sometime reinstalling your Processor, mainboard, VGA, Memory, Hard Drive, Monitor, Keyboard again and again, can give a live back for your computer. Bad mainboard/Bad Power supply/Bad Cable, can cause that. rare if your Processor is dead

same problem twice
I had the same problem with two different pcs. The first one is my gateway about 4 yrs old n the second is an hp about 1 yr old. Now I brought my gateway back to life, I took it all apart everything out of the case and re installed woth bare minimum, original ram, w/out video card n same hdd n wit original optical. All upgrades have been left out. I hit the power button n she booted up fine which made me happy. But with the hp I tried the same thing but no dice, somethin happened wit the mobo I think because everytime I plug in the cable the pc automatically fires up. I think the cmos has it preset to boot after power failure

Hi, and WELCOME TO TECHIMO - from the Folding@Home Team [#111]..!
When you power up the computer, does it POST..? Do you get any beeps..?
I would suggest stripping the machine to the barest essentials:
CPU (and HSF)
MoBo
1 x RAM stick
1 x drive
GPU (if not onboard)
Monitor
Keyboard
If you can't get it to POST, then the problem is with one of those parts; if it can POST, see if it will boot...
Let us know how you get on..
I've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...Whenever someone says "You can't miss it", I invariably do...

Monitor in power save mode, keyboard and mouse not working
Hi I recently replaced my mobo and psu in my computer. The comp boots up but now my monitor, keyboard, and mouse won't come on. I tried hooking up the mouse and keyboard to another computer and they light up so I know they work. As far as the monitor, it says its in power save mode. Can the video card be causing the monitor, mouse and keyboard not to work?

It is possible that the GPU isn't working, which would stop the monitor detecting activity, meaning that it would stay in standby mode - just want to check, when they worked on the other computer, was that with the same power source as you're using on the "problem" computer..?
