Can't determine hardware error

Hi everyone, I'm new to these forums and thought maybe I can get some help here. I'm home for winter break and thought I'd try fixing up my desktop. I've tried doing this for awhile but never could determine what was wrong. I've even reformatted it, so I'm pretty sure its not a software issue.

The computer is just overall going slow. When I start launching several programs at the same time (I used to do this fine), the system goes very slow and gets very laggy. It also used to have this problem where the monitor appeared to have dead pixels or lines of dead pixels, but I'm sure it was not the monitor. Which leads me to think it could be the video card, but I was also unsure about the CPU and/or RAM. I've tried diagnostic software, but it wasn't helpful.

Anyone have any ideas? Sorry if this is too vague, feel free to ask questions.

Check all fans for function. The video card often has a fan. Clean the dust out of them while you're in there.

Check that all memory is installed. You should have 512MB or more (preferrably) for XP.

A failing hard drive can cause lagging and freezing. Check Event Viewer > System for drive errors
