| "Files that cannot be defragmented"
My OS is Windows XP home edition.
When I defrag, I get a message that tells me:
Fragments 9,836
File Size 1.81 GB
However, there is not enough space in the box to learn the full address and name of the file.
Page file fragmentation: Page file size = 4.00 GB; Total fragments = 4
How do I deal with files that cannot be defragmented? |

| What I know about the file
I know nothing, unfortunately. The identification of the file's location and name are not completely visible because the box containing the defrag report is too small. All that appears under the "Files that cannot be defragmented" header is "\Documents and Settings\Saul N Brody\" |

Try defragging in Safe Mode. There are certain batch - type files that aren't "defragable".
I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over it if you can't get it done. It's not like you are gong to "force" Windows to defrag something it doesn't want to defarg.
And Macuse, you need to start your own unique thread so people can concentrate on your isseue.

Do you have any suggestions on how to defrag this file? (Please recall that it is listed as a file that "cannot be defragmented."
With lots of appreciation for your advice. |

Suggestions for what to do next (if anything) are welcome and will be appreciated. |

How do I deal with files that cannot be defragmented? | 9836 fragments for a single file is quite a lot. Windows defragger may not defrag heavily fragmented files at times, especially if they are large files, and/or there is insufficient disk space.
The page file can be set to a static size so it doesn't fragment in the future, or you can defrag it during a boot-time defrag. You can also set the page file size temporarily to zero (not recommended), reboot into windows, defrag, and then re-enable the page file.
Safe mode will not help in either case. Both the above problems are only due to limitations of the windows defragger; there is nothing wrong with the system, so don't worry.
Easiest fix is to grab the free trial version of Diskeeper 2009 Pro from their website, install it and set it auto defrag. It will defrag with idle system resources. After it's done, run a boot-time defrag to fix the page file. The system should be full defragged, and the free space nicely consolidated. The free trial runs for 30 days, so it's plenty of time. |
