    Question UNKNOWN TOOLBAR ICON

    BACKDROP TO CURRENT PROBLEM:

unfortunately Spybot has detected that my computer has one of those new "Right Media" browser entries

    CURRENT PROBLEM:

now i have a lower toolbar icon that which i didn't not install and is apparently something to do with Doubleclick...it first showed up as Doubleclick on the lower toolbar, and then i found it was somehow to do with mozilla firefox

so i uninstalled mozilla and a new icon of this Doiubleclick appeared on the lower toolbar, but now it is hidden in a new Internet Explorer icon on the toolbar that wasn't there until i unistalled mozilla

in other words this Doubleclick thing seemed to migrate from one browser (mozilla) to another (internet explorer) when i uninstalled mozilla

this unknown icon, which is now in its second iteration (this time disguised under the new IE icon) i could not find when i looked in adda/remove programs...it wasn't there

i am using XP operating system

i am by no means a computer expert, but am learnaing fast...anyone help me with this? thanks

    carolee

    Hi, Clieff:

Welcome to TechIMO. The easy way to fix this is by using HijackThis. However, TechIMO does not have a HJT forum where you can post your log and get help. The people who help with this stuff are required to undergo training. So you'll need to register and post in a forum like this one: Security Forums :: View Forum - HijackThis Logs // Malware Removal

    Good luck!

i am having the same problem with IE and FF, i run spybot and spybot detected a "Right Media" browser entry which i know is not good, and while spybot seems to get rid of the Right Media entry temporarily, it keeps coming back

i unistalled spybot, and was then able to get onto AOL, AOL was also giving me a message about its being a firewall problem

i now have a new conundrum...there is a new icon on my lower toolbar which is camouflaging a URL address for Doubleclick...i never installed this icon and cannot find it in Add/Remove programs

i then unistalled FF, and the icon disappeared...but! voila, a new unfamilar icon took its place, and this new icon camouglaging the same Doubleclick URL address looks like a Word page-con with the IE "e" icon superimposed on the Word-page icon

    i hope i'm explaining this clearly...clieff

    Sounds like Spyware to me.
Try running Spybot in Safe Mode.
Also try running hijackTHIS, then posting the logfile here:

As far as I know, Spyboy S&D or Adaware should remove RightMedia.

However, as you have found, RightMedia might simply resurface, meaning you will probably need to temporarily disable System Restore in Windows during the scan and removal process to fully remove the suspect files.

    Right Media

    rob

it's not real media, it's right media

i ran hijack this, but i am a real beginner...i got a logfile from HJT, but don't know what i'm supposed to do with it

spybot removes the right media browser entry, but then it comes back and i usually have to run spybot twice to get rid of it

i had to uninstall spybot last night to even get onto aol

FF and IE won't run, i get a message saying i can only work offline when i try to get onto them

there is also a new icon i didn't install appearing on lower toolbar that disguises some Doubleclick URL

this icon does not show up inadd/remove programs and i didn't put it there

when i uninstalled FF, a new unknown icon, which looks like an IE icon now disguises the same Doubleclick URL

I meant RightMedia. I am multitasking multiple projects this morning.

Try turning off System Restore, then run Spybot or Adaware.

About HJT, you can simply paste logfile text content into this thread.

Cleiff... after doing what Rob suggests in 'Safe Mode' run this registry cleaner until it comes back clean: CCleaner - Download. You may also want to delete the contents of the 'Prefetch' folder in C:\Windows

I had a problem like that and I had to format my hard drive to get rid of it.
