Canon MP390 Printer waste fill error

I need help on solving my waste fill error problem. Are there any steps I can take before I buy a part for my Canon MP 390 printer? The problem is when i print something the text is faded or it won't print anything on the paper. And it makes alot of clicking noises.

Generally, the nifty-stuff.com forums is the place for Canon info. I believe there is a way to clean Canon waste tanks and reset the error message but I've never kept a Canon long enough to fill the waste tank...
