xp log on trouble

i picked up an emachine T2895 w/xp on it, off the curb.got it home and booted it up only to find it needs a password. while it is booting up it does not respond to F2 for set up. a friend said take the cmos battery out and i'd be able to go to setup and change password.that did get me to set up, but tried it 100 times.goes thru process but doesnt work. can some one help?

Wait your topic said xp?

Are you trying to get passed the windows xp logon prompt? That has nothing to do with the bios.

My guess is that the computer boots into XP, they're can't log into it, and trying to change the BIOS is asking for a password that they (obviously) don't have either....

i am trying to get past the user password. when i first turn the computer on , after the boot up was complete, it should one person as a user on the computer. when you click on the users icon it asks for a pass word. i turned it off rebooted and pressed f2 while booting to try to go into setup to try to change the password or try to reset the whole computer to original factory settings, but no luck. any suggestions on how to get into this computer?
