My emachine was hit by lightning and a technician replaced the motherboard but said he couldn't do anything about the soundcard. I saw an external soundcard for sale - plugs into USB port and says it 'talks' to the computer. Will this work? Everything else on my computer works fine and the tech added more ram.

Not recommended. You should buy a real PCI sound card. They are easy to install. Cheap ones work fine.

Thank you for the info. I wonder why the tech didn't suggest doing that though? I paid him to do all the other stuff and when I picked up the computer he said "the sound doesn't work but there's nothing I can do about that".
