I have a bytespeed computer with an intel E7200 Duo Core processor. It came with 2GB of RAM (1 stick). I upgraded with another 2GB stick of RAM. However, I am only getting 3.26 GB of RAM showing. Does anyone know why I am not getting closer to 4 GB? |

XP 32bit OS is limited to around 3+GB Ram. By design, 32bit OS's can't use all of the 4G's

So basically does that mean that if I want to use 4GB or more, I am going to have to go to Vista? (I am a computer teacher, and Apples are not something that will ever happen in my district, so I have to work with PCs)
I am trying to get a video editing class going and I have been having problems with the software, and my best guess was I needed more memory. If you have any suggestions of what I can do within my limited budget, I would appreciate it. |

Vista 32 is the same as far as memory is concerned, you need XP64 or Vista64 to use more RAM.
That total memory for 32 bit includes all memory in your computer, including BIOS, video RAM,ect.
I'm pretty sure it includes swap files also.

From what I have read, Vista is the better choice for 64bit.
Then there is windows 7 free beta download. Welcome to Windows 7
Edit; You will need a 64 bit processor to run a 64 bit OS.

Right now, Vista is not a possibility due to other software that is on the computer and being used. It will probably be at least two more years before I am able to purchase new software that is Vista capable, so I am stuck with XP (25 computers in the lab).
I am using Adobe Premiere Elements, which is a real memory hog so that is why I am desperate to come up with an economical (cheap) solution. |

Actually you know, you will be better off overclocking your processor if you can do that to get the performance. IMO its not gonna make that much of a difference with the extra 800mb. I run Premiere, Photoshop and Illustrator fine without any signs of slowdown on 2 gigs of ram. My processor is quite a bit quicker than yours
