    cyclic redundancy check

     
    hi i am trying to back up a load of photos onto an external hard drive and every now and again i get a message saying "cannot move XXXfilenameXXX data error cyclic redundancy check" what does this mean,

    It means that the connection to the external drive is spotty or the power supply is. It could also be bad RAM or a failing hard drive.

    hi bill thanks for the reply i suspected it might have something to do with the HDD so i ran HDD regenerator and it found a few hundred bad sectors and repaired them and so far so good

    Cool. Just be aware that bad sectors are like a cancer that spreads. They happen because the read head is bumping against the disk surface, generally. Fixing the sectors doesn't fix the problem in this case.

    I would consider replacing the drive.

    well the laptop is for scrap anyway i just needed a temporary fix while i took all the stuff off it now thats done no need to worry any longer
