External Hard Disk Detects only sometimes

Hi,

I have a cavalry 400GB external hard disk. Had dumped 250 GB of data into it. But it does not get detected by the system now. I tried different laptops but in vain. It got detected only for sometime and went off. Only the blue LED of power glows. What should be done?
I just tapped the hard disk and it was detected for some time, may be 5-10 min and again went off.

I can think of two potential issues.

1. A drive letter conflict. Remove all other USB devices and try again. Reassign the drive letter to something higher than H (I, J, K, etc.).
2. The drive is going bad. Since you should NEVER keep important data in only one place, then I assume that 250GB is still somewhere else.
