| Malwarebytes.org WinSock XP Fix - fix XP internet connectivity
Use both.
Windows 2000 is basically WinXP without the eye candy and a few features. For you, the only significant difference is the lack of support for IE7.
Running IE5 was a HUGE mistake. It has been insecure and unsupported for years. You need to keep all PCs updated without failure. My bet is that running IE5 left you vulnerable and that you have a virus, spyware or both.

Did you do as I suggested? I shouldn't have to ask...
You need to scan for viruses, spyware and verify Internet connectivity. You must do all three.
You haven't said whether you had just installed Windows 2000 or whether it was working beforehand. You haven't said whether your network adapter/modem is installed properly or not. You haven't told us why you're working on Win2K when you already have XP. Is it someone else's PC? |

sorry, this is a friend's laptop, acer travelmate 529atx, she bought it off trademe and it came with win2k, I am looking at it for her. I'm learning about the interior of pcs and laptops and get more tech knowledge via sites such as this, she was getting on to the internet at a previous house then she moved house and now she isn't able to connect to the internet, the laptop has an internal lucent softmodem which wasn't being used. I got its drivers off of the acer site, querying the modem gives me a readout. she was using an external xircom modem, querying that also gave me a reading ok, don't know why she wasn't using the internal modem, sounds like a tech told her it wasn't working, however downloading its drivers gives a reading-ok.
I had copied of spyware checkers and downloaded the following: ad-aware 6.0, and spybot search & destroy. They both found spyware, however spybot would not load as of thursday last week, I found a copy of panda, it just caused havoc with the laptop so i uninstalled it pronto...locked up the machine at restart and i couldn't get a desktop, then i tried to download avg and then the internet wouldn't start...now no internet access - comes up with the 'page cannot be displayed' error message. That was when i discovered this site and posed my dilemma, I cannot get the virus checkers onto the laptop as I have no internet connection with it, so, I was wondering whether i would get away with networking my pc to get the virus checker programs downloaded onto her machine or would it be wiser to save all her documents & picx then fdisk - load a copy of xp and her documents....please remember i am newbie2techno, thanx ever soooo much for your patience and knowledge, it is gratefully accepted. |

Your best bet is to reinstall Windows. You can get all the needed drivers from the Acer support site for that model. You should never trust a used PC that had Windows installed already. Acer Europe - Service & Support, Drivers & Utilities, Downloads, Notebook, Acer TravelMate 520 Series
While you can install XP, I don't recommend it because it is only a P3 900MHz and cannot support more than 512MB RAM. You need to reinstall Windows 2000. You should be able to get a copy on eBay: windows 2000 operating system -millenium, Operating Systems items on eBay.com
You can download the proper drivers on your PC, burn them to a CD and carry them to this one.
I don't think that this laptop has a network adapter. Does the person who owns it have cable or DSL? If so, she needs to get a Cardbus network adapter.
Honestly, someone with as little experience as you should not be offering "professional" help. You need to get your learning from books or by working on non-critical scrap PCs on your own.

Oh - you don't have to use FDISK when formatting. That went out with Windows ME/98. When you install Windows these days, setup allows you to destroy, create and format partitions on the fly right in setup.
Save yourself a step or three and just boot from a Windows 2000 CD to start the process. |

It's a lot easier to put the drivers on a USB drive or CD. Don't make this harder than it already is. |
