Hi Mary, and welcome to the forum... When you look in the 'Task Manager', how many processes are running? Also, how often do you defrag, and clear the Browser cache?

It shows that there are 47 processes running. Can you tell me which ones are required and which ones I don't need ? I use avaquest fix it 9. It is set to cleanup every 60 days and to defrag every 30 days. should I change these settings? I thank you for your help. |

That's a lot of processes running in XP... also, if you are doing lots of browsing on the net, check how many days of history are set to save, and the size of the cache. Go to PcPitstop and run a free scan. You have to use MS Internet Explorer Browser @ this site, but the info they provide is well worth it. You may also want to do two other things: Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services... and under 'View' there is an icon for 'Export List' ... do that, then go here for some info on what is/is not recommended to run at start-up: BlackViper Please don't be put off by the name... Google it. I assure you, this guy knows his stuff, and his site is well recommended! Secondly, update your drivers... Go to Nvidia and get the latest GPU driver for your Geforce 6100... very often screen freezes are a GPU related issue.
BTW, when is the last time you cleaned the inside of the puter case? This is easy to do: Get a can of compressed air in the computer isle at WalMart, open up the case, and blow 'er out... Heat is the major cause of component failure...
Any way... (whew) Post back!
Brian
