new mobo and cpu, old hdd.....

I just got a Biostar 760G M2+ board with an AMD Athlon X2 5600 cpu. I'm using my old HDD which has windows xp on it.

I did a windows repair and the computer boots up on the slow side...very slow.

I cannot get on to microsoft update to update xp...every time I try Internet Explorer locks up. When I open IE it is stuck on ask.com. I set the home page as MSN it acts as if I typed msn.com into the search window.

I also cannot access the defrag...an error message pops up and says a file is missing. The disk cleanup utility starts but then freezes 3 bubbles in.

Any help would be great!

2gb ddr2 800 (Transcend)
420w Raidmax psu
80gb Western Digital IDE HDD

Can you do a chkdsk /r from the run box? (requires reboot)

IMO it is always better to backup all your data, format, then do a fresh install when swapping motherboards.

I ran a chkdsk. It took longer than I figured it would...about 45 minutes, got hung up on stage 4, verifying file data for a bit.

I did a windows repair on another computer about 3 weeks ago. New motherboard and cpu, was no prob.
