Router not seen by XP

I got a Thompson router but the computer using XP cant see it.My ISP sent a installation cd but I cant connect with it.I am getting error "Static DNS Entry" error which I've googled;no useful info available.I've been in touch with the ISP who told me to change the DNS server to specific address rather than, automatic find, but this has not helped.Thing is I have dual booted with Ubuntu 9 and it works straight away ubuntu. When I contacted ISP again they gave me the local IP address of the router as 192.168.1.254 so as I could change the security settings but XP just dosnt see the router.I checked out Microsofts Windows XP hardware compatabilty list which dosnt appear to be working.
Usually when I plug in a printer or ipod ,there is a New device detected baloon .Anybody know how I can get XP to see the router ?

I would be sure that the network adapter is enabled in Device manager first.
If its enabled..........the next thing to do is go into the control panel and select add new hardware....xp will scan for new hardware there.
I had a similar problem with a belkin router the other day........I called belkin........they walked through the problem with me......and all was fixed quickly.
